Although the Minnesota high school hockey season is months away, it’s never too early to start looking at some of the players who could build from previous success.
Here’s a look at five players to watch from the East Metro.
Noah Tussey, Stillwater
Tussey was integral in Stillwater’s regular-season success last year and led the Ponies in assists (22) and points (35). He also was fifth-best in the Suburban East Conference in points — behind three seniors and one junior. This year, the junior and University of Minnesota commit, will look to spark the Ponies again after spending the offseason in the USHL and the Upper Midwest Elite League.
Nikolai Dulak, Mahtomedi
Mahtomedi placed third in the 2019 Class 1A state tournament and the Zephyrs run wouldn’t have been complete without Dulak, who netted a goal and an assist in the 7-3 third place win over East Grand Forks, and eight points in the two other games in the Tourney ’19.
Charlie Strobel, Hill-Murray
Expect Strobel, who, in his senior year, will likely captain the 2019-20 Hill-Murray team, to continue creating offense and frustrating goalies across the board. On three occasions last year, Strobel (20-12-32) posted a hat trick or better (12-1 win over Simley, 8-0 win over South St. Paul, and a 14-0 blowout against North St. Paul).
Jonathon Peine, Hastings
As a sophomore, Peine was the Raiders’ top point-getter (36) in 2018-19, and was part of a line that led Hastings to one of its best regular-season finishes in recent memory. Peine, now a junior, is skating with the Minnesota Blades 18U team this fall and will be primed for action when another high school season rolls around.
Lleyton Roed, White Bear Lake
After finishing the 2018-19 campaign with a team second-best 35 points, the 5-foot-10 left-shot forward Roed will return to White Bear Lake for his junior year. Let’s not forget his first-period goal in a 3-2 win over rival Hill-Murray in the Class 2A, Section 4 final that helped catapult the Bears to the Class 2A state tourney.
