SubscribeWith most sports on hold and the 2020-21 season still months out, it’s time to take a look at teams from all over the State of Hockey and examine what happened this past season and what’s ahead. The next team we’re breaking down is Eveleth-Gilbert.
How last season went
The Golden Bears had a solid regular season as they finished with a 16-8 record. Part of that success came in part to a potent offense that averaged 4.16 goals per game.
The biggest stretch of the season for Eveleth-Gilbert came when the Golden Bears rattled off eight consecutive wins, including victories against other strong northern programs such as Greenway and Hibbing/Chisholm.
Heading into the postseason, Eveleth/Gilbert faced its perennial challenge of competing with the likes of Hermantown in Section 7A. Unfortunately for the Golden Bears, they ran into the high-powered Hawks and lost in the section semifinals.
Who’s back and who’s gone
It’s hard to find many prominent returning players for Eveleth/Gilbert. The biggest one appears to be goaltender Andrew Torrel. He posted a 2.00 goals against average and .920 save percentage.
Looking at the statistical leaders for the Golden Bears, it’s hard to find too many returners. Each of Eveleth-Gilbert’s top three scorers are graduating this spring. That includes Elliot Van Orsdel (22 goals, 31 assists), Bryce Kopp (13G, 23A) and Will Troutwine Will Troutwine Defense Eveleth-Gilbert | 2020 State MN (16G, 21A). The other two Golden Bear goaltenders are also graduating. Noah Shuck and Mack Lautigar each spent time manning the net.
What to expect next season
For Eveleth-Gilbert to exceed its 2019-20 season performance, the Golden Bears are going to need some lesser known players to take some big steps. Regardless the year, it’s always difficult to be in a section with a powerhouse such as Hermantown. That appears to one of the bigger challenges for this squad heading into next season.
