How last season went
If you wanted to pinpoint one issue for the Eagles during the 2019-20 season, it was defense. Look at the team’s 4.87 goals allowed per game.
That lack of defense proved to be a flaw right from the get-go. Windom opened the season with a 1-7-1 mark. That left the squad in a hole that was hard to come out of.
The Eagles did find some key wins, including those against Waseca and Fairmont. After the tough start, Windom went 7-7-0 to finish 8-14-1.
In the Section 3A playoffs, Windom came in as the No. 6 seed. New Ulm made quick work of the Eagles in a 9-2 win.
Who’s back and who’s gone
Windom had the season it had while having a mix of younger players along with senior leadership. Let’s start with those who have graduated and moved on from the program.
That starts with Kyle Espenson. He graduates following a team-best 49-point season (28 goals, 21 assists). He departs from the program along with Austin Fredin (9G, 11A).
Some good news is the amount of talent returning to the ice for the Eagles. Alex Espenson (9G, 17A), Brady Espenson (10G, 12A) and Zach Espenson (3G, 17A) are all set to return.
In net, there’s plenty of experience in the form of Dan Stubbe. He is set to be back in net for Windom following 23 appearances last season with a .856 save percentage.
What to expect next season
In order to make some strides, the Eagles have some work to do. But there is returning talent there to make some noise during the 2020-21 season.
