How last season went
Anyone associated with the Cardinal program will likely tell you that last season did not go as planned. Besides the 2-20-1 regular season record, Willmar allowed more than 6 goals per game.
As you can tell, the Cardinals were having issues finding wins during the 2019-20 season. When they did end up in the win column, it was against Redwood Valley.
Heading into Section 3A play, Willmar came in as the No. 9 seed and faced off against Fairmont in the play-in round. The Cardinals’ postseason run and came and went as they lost 4-1.
Who’s back and who’s gone
Elbridge De Kraai looks to be a promising returner for Willmar after he led the team with 28 points last season (17 goals, 11 assists). As for other key returners, look at Ethan Stark (6G, 3A).
Two key seniors are off to their next venture as Devin Sankey (8G, 8A) and Ashton Gregory (6G, 6A) move on following a year where they were productive players on the ice for the Cardinals.
In goal, there is experience to work with there. Ian Koosman is back after playing in 10 games and posting a .854 save percentage. Gavin Steinwand also returns after recording a .843 save percentage in 12 games.
What to expect next season
With last season now in the rear-view mirror, there is a lot of room to grow for Willmar. But that hill is going to be a tough one to climb. The Cardinals need to clamp things down defensively. They also need their returners to make some significant jumps.
