SubscribeWe are about 3 months from the start of the high school hockey season and we are starting to ramp up the coverage over these months for the upcoming season. In this article, we take an early look at the favorites for the 2022 Mr. Hockey award. The Mr. Hockey award is the most touted award in the state, and to get the award you have to be considered as the most outstanding senior high school player in the state of Minnesota. This award gets voted on by a select group of coaches. In this article, I will give my picks on the top 2 most likely incoming seniors to get this award this year. I will not be predicting Brody Lamb, and Jackson Blake as they are expected to stay in juniors for this season- if either of them returns they will be an instant favorite.
1. Drew Fisher Drew Fisher 6'1" | Forward Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State MN | Cretin-Derham Hall | 6’1 Forward | #6 Ranked in the class of 2022 |
My Mr. Hockey 2021 favorite for this upcoming season is also on one of the best teams for this season as well. I like Drew Fisher Drew Fisher 6'1" | Forward Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State MN a lot to win this award, because of his playmaking and goal-scoring ability. Last year in his junior season Fisher had an astonishing 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points. He averaged 2.10 points per game as well last year which is near the top for returning players. His sophomore year he picked up 43 points, so he is very close to the 100 point mark in his career. He is not playing in juniors this summer, so he is for sure locked into high school this upcoming season. I think he will have a better season this upcoming year points-wise, and I see him hitting the 50 point mark. Fisher should lead his experienced team to state and be atop of the Mr. Hockey list at the end of the season.
2. Trey Ausmus | East Grand Forks | 5’11 Defenseman | #4 Ranked in the class of 2022 |
Trey is my number two pick in the very early prediction for Mr. Hockey 2022, I am very high on his ability to make plays and score a lot from the point. Last season he notched 35 points with 11 goals and 24 assists- very solid for a defenseman. I think Ausmus is the most likely defenseman to get this award, as Sarsland doesn’t get as many points. Ausmus improved his point totals every single year so far in high school, there is no reason he shouldn’t continue to improve possibly to 40 points his senior year. It is pretty hard for a defender to get this award as there was just one this last season in Grand Rapids’ Jack Peart Jack Peart 5'11" | Defense Grand Rapids | 2021 State MN , but Ausmus definitely has the tools to have a good chance to be a finalist.
We will be back with continuous Mr. Hockey coverage throughout the offseason and in-season. Just note.. as of now these are my two favorites and there will be more as the season progresses. Still question mark on Jackson Blake if he is going to end up playing this season.
