The senior goalie has been the guy almost all year for the Hornets, and last night proved to be no exception to this rule. Despite Chanhassen out-shooting Edina 34 to 23, it was Bertram who ended up on top in the battle of the net protectors. On the other end of the ice was Kam Hendrickson Kam Hendrickson 6'2" | Goalie Chanhassen | 2024 State MN , arguably the state’s finest goalie from a statistical standpoint. These two were both some of the best to ever do it for their respective schools, but it was Bertram who emerged victorious and clinched the 14th state title for Edina. Cowan saved 33 of the 34 shots that came his way, stifled two power plays, and capped off an absolutely electric state tournament run for the Hornets, one that cements them as the perennial team in high school hockey.
Star: Bobby Cowan Bobby Cowan 5'11" | Forward Edina | 2024 State MN
One of the usual suspects when it comes to scoring, Bobby Cowan Bobby Cowan 5'11" | Forward Edina | 2024 State MN had a surprisingly quiet night through two and a half periods. Edina’s attack as a whole was struggling, being stonewalled by both a tremendous Chanhassen defense and star goalie Hendrickson. It was a struggle for the Hornets, but after a timely goal early in the third period, the game was gridlocked at a 1-1 tie. Both teams traded shots for the next seven minutes, but it was Cowan who broke the drought. The senior goalie ripped a blistering wrist shot from a distance, rifling it right past Hendrickson to give Edina a 2-1 lead, a lead it would hang onto until the final horn. Cowan capped his state tournament off with five points on three goals and two assists, an excellent stat line to end an excellent career for the senior forward.
Stud: Robby Hoch
With a roster that includes Jackson Nevers Jackson Nevers 6'0" | Forward Edina | 2024 State MN , Bobby Cowan Bobby Cowan 5'11" | Forward Edina | 2024 State MN and Mason West, it was almost an expectation that one of these skaters would get the scoring started for Edina on the night. However, as is the nature of sports, hockey is a beautiful, unpredictable game, and to many’s surprise, it was junior Robby Hoch who was able to get the Hornets on the board. The junior defenseman rifled a shot from the blue line that sifted its way through a slew of Chanhassen and Edina players alike to end up in the back of the net. It was just Hoch’s third goal of the season, and clearly the biggest one of his young career. As if he hadn’t done enough with a goal and some solid play on defense, Hoch also assisted the game winning goal, finishing his junior campaign with a legendary performance that etched his name into a storied Edina history book.
